THE COUNT KALNOKY ESTATE OF SZEKLERSZ LAND MIKLOSVAR MICLOSOARA COVASNA

Here I present a short story about the restauration of a lost estate...
Today this small realm is one of the finest places to spend a true holiday in Romania, among the Szekely, a nation known in Middle Age as fierce warriors and defenders of Hungarian Kingdom against Mongols and Turks.

The Kálnoky family had been the first to set up and own a Hussar Regiment in Transylvania (1742), and Count Hugo Kálnoky was celebrated best rider of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy at the end of the 19th century.
At 16, Tibor Kalnoky set up a wild bird hospital in France, and went on to study as a vet in Germany. Tibor then moved to Budapest to work for a veterinary pharmaceuticals company. He returned in Romania in 1997.It took eight years of suing the government for the castle and hunting lodge to be returned. "I always finish what I start," Kalnoky explained determinedly. He now talks passionately of long dreamed of renovations, which he funds from his guesthouse in the remote Miclosoara.

Miklosvar is a village nearby BARAOLT town, Covasna county. At the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, it looks like the setting for Grimm's fairy tales. Although now, storks nest atop electricity pilons, the Szeklers, old Hungarian people, still plough the fields using horses. And, bells herald the swaggering cow parade past Kalnoky's each evening at 8.15pm.

Tibor Kalnoky was born abroad but returned to his Transylvanian homeland after the fall of Communism to reclaim his royal birthright. Having fallen in love with the Hungarian village once ruled by his forebears, he set about restoring its old houses and ended up creating one of the best accommodations in the country.
