STATUE OF MICHAEL THE BRAVE FROM CALUGARENI

Michael the Brave was a great general of XVI century, and the only ruler who succeded to unite the three regions of modern Romania, in 1600, but just for a very short period of time.
This statue celebrate his famous stand against a huge Ottoman army, in August 1595, in a place called Calugareni, not far of Danube, when he won a crushing victory over the Yeniceri and Spahi of Turkish army. It is told that even the commander of Ottoman army was trampled, felt in the marshes and lost his only two teeths left... The Great Visir,Sinan Pasha, was 80 year old then.
Michael was slain during the morning of August 9, 1601 , by Valons mercenaries under the command of general Basta. The order of killing was sent by emperor Rudolf II and the Pope...
Based on his story was made a great historical movie, by director Sergiu Nicolaescu.
The film is ranked by IMDB as the third historic movie in the world.

Mare regizor Nicolaescu...
